Are You Hearing But Not Listening?

Do you frequently hear someone talk and but find out after your conversation that you hadn’t really listened to that individual?

There seems to be a subtle difference between hearing and listening but in reality,  it can be a big difference.  There are those individuals that you will constantly hear talking and hear what they are saying but when you are asked what did they say, your answer might just be, I don’t remember.

On the other hand, when a good speaker that always seems to have a lot of important and helpful words to say, you will be listening to them with both ears and with pen and paper in hand.   There is this distinction in many fields but especially in the online internet marketing arena.

When you hear that one of the leaders in their marketing fields is going to be giving a webinar, then many people will be ready to put their rabbit ears on and enjoy the process.  This whole process is one of having leaders giving their members concise, up to date pertinent material that will help them in their own businesses.

Too many times you have to wander through a series of words  before you get to any important subject matter.  Although it certainly makes your listening much easier when the one delivering the webinar can intermingle humor and stories that have a point to make for the topic at hand.

There comes a time when you feel like everywhere you turn, there is going to be another webinar that this leader or that leader is going to be giving but they all seem to meet at the same time.  So what do you do? Do you try to listen to both of them at the same time going back and forth from one to another or even having two computers that you can see both at the same time.

Now does this get really frustrating in trying to listen to both or do you do the smart thing and listen to only one that you felt might be a little more helpful to you  —   but wait how do I determine which is better and which will I get more information that will definitely help me in my struggle to be successful?

There is no good answer other than decision making that is not only going to be educational but emotionally helpful.  Listen to one now and because most of the webinars will be recorded, listen to the other one at your leisure.

“Every once in a while, the leaders will throw you a curve and say:  You better get this material now because it is not going to be recorded so this is the only time that you can get it.”  Is this a ploy to get you to listen right now because it won’t be recorded?

I don’t know about you, but every now and then, I get frustrated because I can’t listen to them both.  But you know what – it really doesn’t matter because you should be working on your niche and your business and find the webinars that pertain to these.

You don’t have to be all over the place because you can’t watch both, there are plenty more – so relax and enjoy the process – tomorrow will still come and you will still be able to listen to another webinar in which are you want to.

A good friend, Dr. Bob Clarke is an excellent marketer and he posted the other day:

“BUSINESS TIP: You do NOT have to attend every webinar that your company puts out! Nor do you need to attend each webinar that is advertised in our space, even if it’s by one of your favorite trainers.

Be SELECTIVE!! Only attend webinars that will serve you in what you’re working on RIGHT NOW.

You’ll be amazed at how much more time you have….

Time that you can turn into ACTION towards truly building your business.”

Now doesn’t that make a whole lot of sense?  Life is way too short to short circuit your training and your fun.  Enjoy the ride because I can almost guarantee you, with this philosophy of being selective, you will get there far easier and with a whole lot more fun, as well as being successful.

  1. This reminds me of that old saying “A jack of all trades is a master at none”! It’s very important in this informational age to be selective in what information you “listen to” keeping in mind what will help you in the now to grow as a person.

Great points here John that everyone needs to consider before they try to do everything… as this can and will spread a person to thin thus causing them to sell themselves short on their goals. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Great stuff, John! There is only so much time and attention we can give. Being a selective sifter not only saves you time, it give you the focus that helps you become very attractive to your potential customers, clients and partners. Thanks for posting this!
