Why Mindset Anyway?

This word continues to permeate the halls of internet marketer’s homes and we continue to ignore some of the basics that are involved with mindset.

What is the definition of Mindset?  If you attempt to look up the word “mindset” in relatively new dictionaries, it does not exist.  It is a term or idea that Carol Dweck, a world famous psychologist and researcher from Stanford University, coined the word to help illustrate a possible difference between a positive approach to life as opposed to one that is negative.

Dr. Dweck did many years of research in the area of achievement and success before she came up with the word mindset to explain the difference between those who do and those who don’t.  A growth mindset creates productivity and motivation in many areas whereas a fixed mindset has a tendency to keep people in a mode of being content where they are.

George Zalucki, the author of Network Marketing Straight Talk, found that when he was coaching college basketball, that the most talented didn’t always win but those who had the most desire, even though they might not have been as talented, were the big winners of games as well as themselves.

Is mindset what really defines what we attempt to use within our businesses or our personal lives to make a difference in our outside appearance as well as our inner makeup.  Dr. Dweck feels that a mindset change is one that can be learned rather one that was given to us at birth.

A good example is a young child that is continually learning new things and continues to work at it in their new world.  Learning to walk and talk, these are things that when they fall or don’t get the right pronunciation, they continually try it until they walk and can say words.   Unfortunately a  fixed mindset could end of all these experiences of learning if they chose to be satisfied with where they were.

A gifted mind isn’t always given to one at birth (although there are obvious situations where a genius is born) and usually one has to expand their learning to continue to learn new and effective things along their way of growing up.  This can also be related to individuals who are not willing to grow because “they know it all” or they just aren’t interested in growing their mindset.  (This could be some CEOs that you know)

I think that most of us think of mindset in our contemporary position in life as a willingness to put positive things into focus and continue to work hard at developing a growth mindset.   A mindset that allows us to look at things from a more positive approach and   to utilize all the things at our disposal to continue down that path.

What specifically are we talking about when we refer to a growth mindset and a positive outlook.  One might be in education of ourselves, the real desire to open up our minds and learn things that will help us to succeed more in what ever walk of life we have decided to take.  If a leader suggests that you look at things a little differently and try to encompass a situation a different way and you accept their challenge, then this certainly is a positive undertaking- a change in your mindset.

What can you do to view your own mindset and decide if this is really what you want to do or more importantly, what you need to do to succeed in any endeavor you undertake.

1) First of all, you need to realize that you do have a choice and you can put yourself in the proper framework.  You are always going to have challenges, bumps in the road, and yes criticism but it is the way you handle these that is truly going to make the difference in your approach.  It can either be with a fixed mindset or a growth mindset – the choice is yours.

2) You need to listen to your mindset voice at the time.  And you do know that we are our biggest excuse makers for deciding whether or not to take responsibility for where we are, right now!! We need to take responsibility for who we are and own it!

3) Take your own thoughts and feelings and talk to them with your growth mindset.  And darn it – you are capable of doing what you set out to do, if you put your mind to it!!

4) Just take the action with your growth mindset.  It is not going to happen overnight nor will it take you 5 years, but if you begin, in more cases you will see a difference in 21 days or 3 weeks.  You don’t know unless you try it.  If you think this is bunk – that’s your choice but you might be looking at this with a fixed mindset  rather than a growth mindset.

Here’s to your growth mindset!!!!
